“On A Quest To Be The Best”

Little Chocolate Donuts

Has your diet been looking a little bit like the “Little Chocolate Donut” meal plan recently?

Here’s a simple diet plan to help get you back on track:

as compiled by Master Steve D.

Morning 6 am – 10 am: Low fat, low sugar yogurt, one serving fresh fruit, hot beverage with no cream or sugar (artificial sweeteners are acceptable).

Afternoon 12 pm – 2 pm: Roll-up “wrap” sandwich (turkey, chicken, beef, tuna are all fine). Salt and pepper to taste and a hot beverage with no cream or sugar (artificial sweeteners are acceptable). Lettuce and tomato or a similar vegetable is fine.

Late afternoon 4 pm – 5 pm: Low fat yogurt and a hot beverage or a serving of fresh fruit or even a small salad with low fat dressing will do.

Dinner 7 pm – 9 pm: One serving of green leafy salad with carrots and cucumbers and low fat dressing, One portion (the size of your palm) of steak or chicken or fish or pork or similar (grilled with salt and pepper to taste) and a green vegetable (no butter), salt and pepper to taste.

Late Night 10 pm – 12 am: If you’re hungry, yogurt or fruit or oatmeal with artificial sweetener.

Drink a glass of sparkling water (or tap water) with every meal and as much bottled water or hot beverages as you like all day.

If at any point you feel weak, irritable or dizzy, add an additional portion of yogurt, fruit or protein.

Expect to lose 2-3 pounds per week with this plan. If you lose more or less, adjust your intake to achieve these results.

If you have any pre-existing conditions or are on any type of medication, please check with your physician prior to following this meal plan. Remember to check with your Health Professional prior to beginning this or any meal plan.

If you’re serious about changing your diet and appearance consider becoming part of our team. Nutritional consulting is included (at no extra charge) with all our adult programs.

The Safety of Energy Drinks…

Are Energy Drinks Safe to Consume?

Here are some things to consider:

1. CAFFEINE. Some energy drinks contain as much caffeine as 14 cans of soda. Energy drinks may contain up to 280 mg of caffeine, while the average cup of coffee contains about 80 mg. In unsafe quantities caffeine can lead to symptoms such as nervousness, insomnia, increased blood pressure, & anxiety.

2. DEHYDRATION. Caffeine and sugar may provide a quick boost in energy levels, however they do not provide proper hydration. In fact caffeine, a diuretic, may promote dehydration, particularly in large quantities. Consuming an energy drink while exercising or engaging moderate physical activity can result in severe hydration due to fluid loss.

3. RISK OF HEART ATTACK OR STROKE. That’s no joke. According to a Wake Forest University study students who consumed just one 250 ml can of sugar free Red Bull experienced abnormal blood test results an hour later. These results indicated an increased risk of heart attack or stroke due to the changes observed (basically the drink caused blood to become “stickier”). Anyone with a known (or unknown) underlying cardiovascular or circulatory condition is at an even greater risk.

Red Bull has been banned in Norway, Uruguay, and Denmark due these and other health risks associated with energy drinks.

These are just some of the things to consider when you consume these drinks. The jury is still out on the short-term benefits of consuming them and the long term effects of consuming energy drinks is unknown. Our suggestion is to get proper rest, exercise, and eat a healthy diet. That should provide you with all the energy you need to power through your day.

Until next time…

Holiday Eating: 5 Tips for Healthy Holidays!

Tips for Surviving the 2009 Holiday Season!

Did you know the average adult gains 7 pounds during the Holiday Season?!

Below are some tips for healthy eating during a very challenging time of the year – the Holidays! We all know that food (and drink) can be an important part of many holiday celebrations. It can be quite challenging not to overindulge, especially when anticipating a new exercise and diet plan that you’ll start January 1st, 2010! Rest assured you can enjoy your favorite holiday foods and still maintain your weight.

1.) Be physically active. Everyone’s schedule gets hectic around the Holidays with parties, shopping, visiting family, etc. Physical activity such as brisk walking, jogging, or cycling can help regulate your appetite and burn extra calories from holiday eating.

2.) Decide in Advance (D.I.A.). Before attending a holiday party or event decide in advance what foods are important to you to eat, how many drinks you’re going to have, and what desserts you would like to partake in. Don’t allow yourself to stray from your plan – moderation and self-discipline are the keys here.

3.) Choose beverages wisely. Alcoholic drinks are high in calories – some liquors contain up to 450 calories per glass. If you must drink, limit yourself to one or two drinks per occasion and try to choose “light” beers and wine drinks.

4.) Don’t go to a party hungry. Enjoy a light snack prior to arriving at a party. If you go to a party on an empty stomach you are much more likely to overeat and make poor food choices. Consider having a piece of fruit or a cup of yogurt before you head off to celebrate.

.
5.) Chew gum. This is a simple little trick that can help you avoid diving into the bowls of snacks or buffet table.

The Health Risks of Diet Soda

This was originally featured on AOL Health and was written by Deborah R. Huso
Diet Cola

Diet Cola

If you think you’re doing yourself a favor by drinking diet soda instead of the real deal, think again. It’s true you may be protecting your waistline from empty calories, but new research suggests you may be beating up your kidneys instead.

Over the weekend, researchers from the Nurse’s Health Study  in Boston released findings that indicate women who drink two or more diet sodas a day experienced a 30 percent drop in kidney function over the course of a two decades long study. More than 3,000 women participated in the study, the median age being 67. Lead researcher Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a physician at Brigham Women’s Hospital says the outcomes were especially startling because the women surveyed all had health kidney function at the start of the research.

After critically analyzing the beverage intake of study participants, researchers found those who drank two or more diet sodas daily had a significant dip in the kidneys’ glomerular filtration rate, which measures kidney function. Natural aging generally results in a decreased filtration rate of about 1 mL per minute per year after age 40. In contrast, the rate of those who consumed diet soda significantly decreased by 3mL per minute per year. The study showed no link between decreased kidney function and other beverages or any decreased function in women who had less than two diet sodas a day.

This doesn’t mean your kidneys are safe, however, if you opt for regular sodas. A study published earlier this year in PLoS ONE, a journal of the Public Library of Science showed that women drinking two or more cans of regular soda a day are nearly twice as likely to suffer from early signs of kidney disease as non-soda drinkers. Researchers don’t understand the cause for certain but suspect it has to do with the intake of large amounts of high fructose corn syrup.

With some 26 million Americans suffering from chronic kidney disease, it’s obviously become a national health problem. While studies to date on the relationship between kidney function and soda (diet or regular) have been small, they add more fuel to the fire for cutting soda intake, even if you’re a diet drinker. When it comes to your health, water is always the best beverage.

Definitely some food for thought. Even drinking diet soda a few times a week seems to be a poor choice. If you’re serious about changing your diet and appearance consider becoming part of our team. Nutritional consulting is included (at no extra charge) with all our adult programs.

Memories from The Karate Kid – Sweep The Leg!

Sweep The Leg!

This is a music video for a song called, “Sweep The Leg!” by a band called No More Kings. It’s a humorous take on where Johnny from the Cobra Kai Dojo has ended up 20 years after his role in “The Karate Kid.”

If you are a fan of The Karate Kid movies you will get a kick out of this! Many of the same actors from the movie make an appearance including a cameo by Ralph Macchio (Daniel San himself!).

Interestingly, the video was written and directed by William Zabka (the actor who played Johnny in the Karate Kid). The song is by Pete Mitchell & Neil Robins. Enjoy!
